CHS could hire football coach this week

Clovis High School hopes to have a new head football coach as soon as Thursday, Athletic Director Lonnie Baca said.
Baca said school officials are scheduled to interview nine candidates for the job on Wednesday. A committee of four school administrators will meet after the interviews and Baca said they hope to offer the position later that evening or Thursday morning.
The job became open earlier this month when Cal Fullerton resigned after five years as Wildcats’ head coach.
Baca said he was surprised Fullerton quit; high school football coaches usually change jobs before spring practice. But Baca said he’s optimistic about candidates.
“I was pleasantly surprised” at the quality of candidates, Baca said. “I thought it might be hard to get people to apply this time of year, but we had four people apply the first day it was open.”
Baca declined to name any of the applicants and would not say if any current members of the CHS coaching staff applied for the job.
“We have applicants from a variety of places, including from New Mexico and from out of state,” he said.
School officials advertised the job through a Texas coaches online forum, MaxPreps and New Mexico Activities Association, Baca said.
“We want somebody who has had head coaching experience or who has been on a varsity staff as a (offensive or defensive) coordinator. Also someone who will be of great character and a culture builder who will work with our kids,” Baca said.
The Wildcats football team is coming off a 3-6 season that ended with a first-round playoff loss to Las Cruces High.
Fullerton compiled a 24-24 record in his five years as CHS’ head football coach.
