ENMU releases football schedule

PORTALES – Eastern New Mexico University’s football season kicks off on a Thursday, features 11 games and includes matchups against both of New Mexico’s other Division 2 schools for the first time since 2002.

The Portales university released the schedule last week. Officials said season tickets will be available “soon,” while single-game tickets will go on sale in August.

“There are many kids on our roster from the state of New Mexico and we take a lot of pride in working to be the best D2 school in the state,” said ENMU coach Tye Hiatt on the chance for his D2 team to take on New Mexico Highlands and Western New Mexico.

“I know our kids are excited to compete against old teammates and play in front of their friends and family.”

The Greyhounds are coming off a 4-7 record a year ago.

According to an ENMU news release:

The Greyhounds open the 2022 campaign with a weekday trip to Las Vegas, New Mexico, to take on Highlands on Sept. 1.

The Hounds hold a 32-13 advantage in the series and are looking to keep the momentum going against the Cowboys as they have won the past two meetings with the most recent meeting coming in 2015.

The Greyhounds open their home schedule against Lone Star Conference foe Midwestern State on Sept. 10. That’s when ENMU will also celebrate Military Appreciation Night with kickoff set for 6 p.m.

ENMU will hit the road with a pair of LSC matchups in Texas to close out the first month of play.

The Hounds will reunite against Tarleton State (Sept. 17) for the first time in three years as the Texans joined the Division I membership of the NCAA. The game will be televised on ESPN+. The team will then face Texas A&M Kingsville on Sept. 24.

“The opportunity to play Tarleton is a great chance for our kids to showcase themselves… and be able to play on ESPN,” Hiatt said.

“We have some great history with Tarleton and we look forward to renewing that relationship. This game will be a great test for us as a program and our players and coaches are excited for the challenge.”

Eastern New Mexico leads the overall series against Tarleton State, 14-13, with the program’s latest win over the Texans coming in 2017 on the road.

ENMU’s annual homecoming game is set for Oct. 1 against Central Washington.

The annual Wagon Wheel rivalry with West Texas A&M University is scheduled Nov. 5 at Canyon.

Eastern’s regular season wraps up Nov. 12 when it hosts Western New Mexico.
