Local 4th grade team off to 26-1 start

CLOVIS - The New Mexico Roadrunners, a team made up of fourth graders from the area, have posted a 26-1 record since starting their season in early March.

The Roadrunners, coached by Jordan Lee, Marcos Loera and Trent Quintana, have participated in seven tournaments this season and won six of them.

Last weekend, they competed in the Southwest Salza Slam in Albuquerque and won five games en route to the championship. They defeated El Paso Showtime 35-28, the West Texas Canes 29-27, the Southside Reapers 39-24, El Paso Flight 39-24 and, in the finals, the West Texas Canes 35-29.

Their only loss came in the finals of the Get Buckets Tournament in Lubbock, where they lost to a team comprised of fifth graders in the championship game.

Other tournament wins were in the Texico Tip Off, a Mack Brown tournament in Dora, the Texas Boys Classic in Hereford, the Southwest Shootout in Anton, Texas and the G4G Jamboree in Lubbock.

The team is compiled from several area high schools, including Lockwood and Mesa in Clovis, as well as Texico, Farwell, Bovina, Fort Sumner and Dalhart, Texas.

They do a number of fund raising events to help cover their expenses, Lee said.

The team's next tournament is the Memorial Day Classic at Lubbock in two weeks. The Roadrunners are also set to compete in the Spurs national tournament in San Antonio from June 23-26 where, if they were to reach the finals, they would play the championship game on the home of the five-time world champion San Antonio Spurs.

Lee said the Roadrunners hope to play in some tournaments during July, and might finish the season in a tournament in Dallas from Aug. 5-7.
