A changing mission and long tradition are reflected in the new emblem for the 27th Operations Wing (SOW) of the U.S. Air Force, based at Cannon Air Force Base, Clovis.
The new emblem reflects a new mission for the 27th SOW, which came about in October with the addition of AC130-ACJ gunship aircraft to the fleet at Cannon and the 17th Special Operations Squadron for operation and training of the new gunships, the 27th SOW public affairs office confirmed on Tuesday.
The new emblem preserves fields of golden yellow and ultramarine blue that have been part of the 27th SOW's emblem since it began at Cannon in 1959 as the 27th Fighter Wing, according to the public affairs office.
The new spear head on the emblem represents Air Force Special Operations Forces, which have been called the "spear tip of the Air Force," the public affairs office stated, because they can "swiftly and quietly mobilize" to fight.
The globe with an arrow represents the essence of the 27th SOW's mission, the public affairs office stated, to execute specialized airpower anywhere around the world.
The 27th SOW is part of the Air Force's Special Operations Force, which combines with other branches of the military in a Special Operations Command that mobilizes all over the world, according to the command's website.
