Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
In the race to fill the Roosevelt County District 3 commissioner’s seat, three Republican candidates are vying in the June 7 primary election to represent the party in the Nov. 8 general election.
There are no Democrats running in the primary election.
Incumbent district three commissioner Shane Lee is leaving the office because he has served two consecutive terms, the maximum allowed.
The job pays $22,832 annually.

Q: Why do you believe you are the best candidate for the job of district three commissioner?
A: Experience.
I was commissioner eight years ago for district three. I was on Dora City Council, fire chief at Dora six years ago, assistant chief before that.
You have to have the experience to know what’s going on. I’ve been through it all before and I have the experience to be a good commissioner.
I grew up in Roosevelt County. I drive a school bus and I drive over a lot of the roads and that’s part of your job, the condition of the roads.
Q: Why are you running as a Republican?
A: When I first started voting I was a Democrat, then it seemed that my feelings, my values, lined up better with the Republicans.
I’m a conservative and a Christian.
Q: What are the most pressing issues in Roosevelt County?
A: The budget. Getting the funding for the roads, the detention center, the road equipment and vehicles and equipment the sheriff’s department needs.
Q: What is the commissioner’s job?
A: I think the commissioner has to be a servant.
I have a servant’s heart, a gift from my heavenly Father. If you’re serving your county you have to work with others, take care of the budget, listen to people’s complaints about the roads, the tumbleweeds and try to make life better for them.
Q: What is the purpose of government?
A: It’s to take care of people’s needs as far as safety through fire departments, police.
I think government is getting too big. There are things the state government and federal government are doing that I wish they wouldn’t and leave it to the local governments.
Local governments know the condition of their county, their state.
There’s too many regulations out there now.

Q: Why do you believe you are the best candidate for the job of district three commissioner?
A: I bring a fresh set of eyes and an open mind to this candidacy.
Roosevelt County has been good to me and my family. I think we need change in a positive way.
The greatest asset that I can bring to the table is I am not afraid to ask a question.
Q: Why are you running as a Republican?
A: I’m a big supporter of the sheriff’s office and police departments, I’m a big supporter of the Second Amendment, marriage is between man and woman. I believe in closed borders and pro-life.
Q: What are the most pressing issues in Roosevelt County?
A: I think roads and the sheriff’s department.
Roads are always a big concern of the county residents.
I feel like the sheriff’s department is understaffed, underpaid and doesn’t get enough support for putting their lives on the line 24/7 for the residents of Roosevelt County.
Q: What is the commissioner’s job?
A: Overseeing the management and representing the residents of the county.
Q: What is the purpose of government?
A: To uphold the Constitution of the United States and to have law and order.
Sawyer May
Q: Why do you believe you are the best candidate for the job of district three commissioner?
A: It’s like a farm. Your dad ran it for a lot of years then he finally gives you a chance to run it and you come in with new ideas.
I have different views and ideas on what to do on just how to make Roosevelt County the county it truly can be.
Q: Why are you running as a Republican?
A: I think it’s just the view I’ve been raised on, the view I believe in.
I think the way it’s run is just the best way it can be run, those views right there.
Q: What are the most pressing issues in Roosevelt County?
A: I feel getting attention for Roosevelt County is most important.
There’s a lot of little towns that get attention and I believe Roosevelt County deserves more attention than it actually gets.
There’s a lot of things we can do to get people to Portales and Roosevelt County. We have the facilities.
Q: What is the commissioner’s job?
A: It is to delegate budgets, spend money where it needs to be spent and save money where it needs to be saved.
To be a voice for the people you represent in your district. To be there when people have a problem and do your best to fix it.
Q: What is the purpose of government?
A: Its purpose is to be the main voice for the people.
