ROSWELL — Portales High’s baseball team tried to rally twice in Saturday’s District 4-4A twin bill against Roswell Goddard, only to come up short both times.
The Rams nearly dug out of a six-run hole in the final two innings of the opener before losing 9-8, then erased most of a 5-0 deficit with a four-run sixth before dropping a 7-4 decision in the nightcap.
Goddard, which lost to the Rams 7-4 in Portales on Thursday night, stayed on the heels of Artesia (14-9, 6-0) in the district race.
The Rockets (12-10, 5-1) raced to a 7-1 lead after two innings in Game 1, and led 9-3 before the Rams (9-14, 1-5) scored four times in the top of the sixth. PHS got one more in the seventh, but that was it as the Rockets survived seven fielding miscues.
Five Portales pitchers combined to limit the Rockets to five hits. Catcher Cinco Holloway hit a bases-loaded triple in Goddard’s four-run first.
Sophomore Andru Ontiveros and freshman Layton Faust each had a pair of knocks for the Rams, who finished with eight hits. Goddard’s Lucas Wright pitched into the sixth inning, and junior Colby Eldridge got the final five outs for a save.
In the second game, the Rockets opened a 5-0 lead with a four-run third. Senior Hagen Rains’ two-run triple helped the Rams get close in the sixth, but the Rockets added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom half.
Senior Caleb Seely got the win with a complete-game effort for the Rockets. Despite the loss, Portales again had a major advantage in hits (8-3).
PHS finishes out the regular season with three games this week against Lovington — a 5 p.m. single game on Thursday at Lovington, and a 5 p.m. doubleheader on Friday at Ram Field.
