Range fire burns 2,500 acres in Roosevelt County

A wind-driven wildfire that started northwest of Portales some time early Thursday afternoon burned through about 2,500 acres, according to a very preliminary estimate from Portales Fire Chief T.J. Cathey, who was the incident commander.

There were no injuries to firefighters and no buildings were damaged in the blaze, Cathey said.

At 6 p.m., fire crews were patrolling in smoky haze for hotspots a few miles east of US Route 70 along Cacahuate Road, State Route 202.

Units from surrounding fire departments, including Clovis, Dora and Arch, among others, assisted in fighting the blaze.
