Pages past, March 30: Paving way on Llano Estacado

On this date …

1987: Several homeowners who lived along Clovis’ Llano Estacado Boulevard were protesting plans to turn the dirt road into a four-lane paved highway.

They had voiced their concerns to the executive committee of the Economic Development Division of the New Mexico Highway Commission, which was considering the project.

“The thing is, it’s already a racetrack through there,” Marcie Bell told the Clovis News-Journal. “We don’t live there, but the grandkids do.

“Our thinking is, these kids moved to the country because they didn’t want the traffic. Now they’re going to be right in the middle of it.”

Committee Chairman Walter Bradley said the road needed to be developed to provide a relief route for the excessive traffic on 21st Street.

Llano Estacado Boulevard was paved in the early 1990s.
