Ruidoso topples Cats; Rams rout Jal

ROSWELL - Trailing 5-1, Ruidoso rallied for six runs in the top of the sixth inning on Thursday to beat Clovis High 7-5 in the opener of a three-day tournament hosted by Roswell High.

The Wildcats' scheduled Friday matchup against Gallup was canceled due to wet field conditions caused by overnight snow. They were scheduled to face Moriarty in their weekend finale on Saturday afternoon.

The Cats (1-4) opened a four-run lead with three in the bottom of the fifth, with the first tally coming in on an error before junior Jasiahs Jimenez hit an RBI triple and scored on a single by senior Justin Lawson.

Sophomore Nathan McIntosh carried that lead into the sixth, but three CHS errors led to three unearned runs and helped the Warriors (3-1) come from behind.

"You have to tip your hats to Ruidoso," CHS baseball coach Richard Cruce said. "There was no quit in them."

Junior Cooper Pritchett tripled home the first run of the sixth, then scored on a sacrifice fly which was dropped in the outfield. Later, sophomore Sebastian Lawrence hit a run-scoring single, and he and another runner came home on an outfield error on the play.

Junior Reid Enjavy singled, stole second and scored the final run of the frame on a passed ball and a wild throw to third.

The Cats jumped in front in the bottom of the first when junior Joseph Albert singled, stole second and scored on a single by freshman Kobyn Rivera. After Ruidoso tied it in the second, Clovis took the lead in the bottom half of the inning when sophomore Will Jordan led off with a triple and scored on a single by senior Derek Bretz.

McIntosh went six innings, allowing seven hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

The Cats return to action on Tuesday with a 5 p.m. tilt at Lovington.

Portales 22, Jal 0 (Monday) - The Rams opened their campaign with an easy win at Ram Field in a game shortened to 4 1/2 innings by the 10-run rule.

Sophomore Zane Mayberry went 2-for-2 with two bases-loaded walks and four RBIs for the Rams, who jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening frame and then added 14 runs in the second. Senior Brandon McGill drove in three runs for the Rams, while senior Alex Garcia and sophomore Kadyn Gutierrez each drove in two.

Junior Miguel Gomez worked three innings on the mound, allowing a first-inning single and striking out five. Carmello Nunez finished, tossing two hitless innings with two walks and two strikeouts.

Portales returns to action with a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Monday at Raton.
