Tigers outlast Dora in 2 OTs, clinch 4-1A title

ELIDA — Elida’s version of a “Big 3” combined for 75 points on Thursday night, and the Tigers needed almost all of them to get past Dora 91-84 in double overtime, clinching the District 4-1A regular-season title.

Juniors Jose Jimenez and Aiden Yates netted 32 and 25 points, respectively, while senior Rylan Creighton added 18. The teams have a good chance of playing again this week in the finals of the district tournament.

The game seesawed most of the night. It was tied 68-68 at the end of regulation and 81-81 after the first OT before Elida (19-4) posted a 10-3 advantage over the Coyotes (13-9, 4-2) in the second extra session.

Junior Steven Masini had 24 points and 30 rebounds for Dora, while sophomore Cache Skelley tossed in 21 points and junior Bryson Paxton 14.

In other boys action on Thursday:

Melrose 77, San Jon 13 — All 14 Buffaloes managed to score at Melrose.

Melrose (16-7, 5-3) led 18-4 at the quarter and held the Coyotes (0-17, 0-10) to two points over the middle two frames. Junior Asher Lunsford set a personal best with 11 points for the Buffs, while seniors Logan DeVaney and Brandon Garcia each tallied 10.

For San Jon, junior Matthew Martinez scored seven points.

In another District 6-1A contest, host Logan (8-16, 4-6) held on for an 86-80 victory over Grady (7-18, 2-8).

In girls tilts on Thursday:

Wellington 58, Farwell 39 — In a Texas Class 2A area round game played at Canyon Randall H.S., the Skyrockets (15-4) advanced to the regional semifinals with a win over the Lady Blue (28-5).

Wellington expanded a one-point lead to 30-19 at halftime. Only four players scored for the Farwell, with freshman Landri Richey posting a personal-best 21 points and junior Charlie May Trimble contributing 10.

Melrose 54, San Jon 30 — At Melrose, the Lady Buffs got off to a sluggish start, but took control of the District 6-1A matchup with 29-2 surge in the second quarter to erase an early four-point deficit.

Sophomore Graci Odom matched her season best with 19 points for Melrose (15-7, 5-3), while junior Isabelle Sena scored 14. For the Lady Coyotes (4-13, 0-8),

Logan 75, Grady 44 — Leading by nine at halftime, the Lady Longhorns used a 23-point third quarter to pull away in District 6-1A.

Sophomore Hailee Robertson knocked down five 3-pointers and finished with 23 points for Logan (20-5, 6-2), while seniors Reece Goldston and Kyra Conway chipped in 14 and 12, respectively. For the Lady Bronchos (9-13, 2-6), freshman Juanita Ramirez led the way with 14 points while sophomore Shayla White and freshman December Garza each finished with nine.
