English gardens ahead on show

Information on creating a floral English garden, and how to use magazine pages to create purses, totebags and other items will be the featured topics on “Creative Living” at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday and at noon Thursday.

Floral designer Carly Cylinder will show how to combine flowers and fruit in a basket to create an English garden. This makes an inexpensive, yet impressive arrangement that is great to use for many occasions. Her company is Flour LA and Flour LA Jr., and she lives in Brooklyn, NY.

Information on making lip balms and bath fizzies and a new way to do smocking on fabric will be the featured topics on “Creative Living” at noon Tuesday and at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Sandy Grettenberger, LorAnn Oils, will show how to make luscious lip balms and outrageous bath fizzies – which are two fun projects for the kid in all of us.

Sewing expert,Vivian Lavinskas will demonstrate the “modern way” to do smocking on fabric. Her sample will be a child’s dress with a smocked bodice. Lavinskas is the former manager of Consumer Affairs with Singer Sewing Company.

Magazine technique for purses, journals

Materials:

Earth Safe Finishes™ Gel Medium

Earth Safe Finishes™ Shimmer Translucent http://www.earthsafefinishes.com(2-3 colors of Copper, Gold Sparkle and Pearl

1” - 1 1/2” Dynasty® Paint Brushes (www.dynasty-brush.com) ()

Assorted Trims by Expo International (www.expointl.com)

2 - 3 yards Woven Braid by Expo Fabric Tac by Beacon Adhesives (www.beaconcreates.com)

Cloth Base: old clothing, fabric, placemats, etc.

Torn out Magazine Pages

Toothpick

Scissors

Clothes Pins

Instructions:

Apply gel medium to back side of magazine pages with paint brush and on fabric base; place magazine onto base then add gel medium on top side of magazine page; continue until fabric base is covered.

Apply Shimmer Translucents on top and let dry.

Cut the fabric base for purse or journal (making your own pattern or using purchased pattern.)

Apply trims to the inside and outside with glue; let dry.

Tips:

• Good quality magazine pages work best.

• Cut or tear magazine pages for the look you like.

• If you don’t like how something looks add another piece over it.

• Add Shimmers until you are happy with the look, you can never add too much.

• Use toothpick to apply Fabric Tac.

• Use clothespins to hold trim in place while drying.
