Weather wipes out Thursday's area slate

All seven area small-school high school basketball games scheduled for Thursday night were called off due to the inclement weather.

District 6-1A doubleheaders sending Melrose to Logan and Fort Sumner to Grady were rescheduled for Friday and Tuesday, respectively, while a 6-1A boys game sending Clovis Christian to San Jon was moved to Feb. 16. A non-district twin bill with Dora traveling to Floyd probably will not be made up.

In area girls games on Tuesday:

Grady 58, Floyd 31 — At Grady, the Lady Bronchos cruised to a non-district win behind 18 points from sophomore Shayla White and 16 from sophomore Taylor Foote.

For Floyd (1-12), sophomore Jona Baros collected 11 points and freshman Nevaeha Brown added nine.

Farwell 63, Boys Ranch 34 — In District 3-2A action at Boys Ranch, the Lady Blue (26-4, 7-0 district) opened a 40-9 halftime lead over the Lady Riders.

Freshman Makylee Baldwin led Farwell with 16 points, while sophomore Chloee Whitten had 11 and junior Jaelyn Smith 10. For Boys Ranch (3-9, 0-7), sophomore Althea Usanga tallied 12 points and senior Braniya Blount scored 10.

Vega 63, Bovina 43 — In District 3-1A at Vega, the Lady Longhorns (10-8, 4-3) jumped on top 20-7 at the quarter and stayed comfortably ahead throughout.

Senior Pilly Saenz and junior Alyssa Marquez were the top scorers for Bovina (9-13, 1-5) with 10 points apiece.

In area boys action on Tuesday:

Elida 63, Dora 57 — In a key District 4-1A matchup, the Tigers held off the homestanding Coyotes at Elida to take sole possession of first place.

Junior Aiden Yates poured in 26 points for Elida (14-2, 2-0), including 13 to help the Tigers outscore Dora 18-14 in the final stanza. Senior Rylan Creighton added 22 points for Elida.

Dora’s Steven Masini had a monster night trying to keep the Coyotes (10-8, 2-1) in the contest, scoring 21 points and adding 26 rebounds. Senior Cache Skelley and junior Bryson Paxton chipped in 13 apiece for Dora.

Farwell 68, Boys Ranch 42 — Junior Alec Actkinson led four players in double figures for the Steers with a season-best 15 points in District 3-2A at Boys Ranch.

Sophomore Corey Stancell posted 12 points for Farwell (22-5, 4-1), while senior Grayson Waldrop and junior Adrian Nunez followed with 10 apiece. For the Roughriders (4-13, 0-5), 6-foot-5 senior Jayden Slate finished with a game-high 25 points.

Grady 55, Floyd 46 — At Grady, the host Bronchos held Floyd to just 10 points over the middle two quarters to erase a four-point deficit in a non-district tilt.

Sophomore Zane Rush netted 16 points and senior Jordan Verbel 12 for Grady (6-14), while sophomore Daegan East had 12 points and senior Kason East 10 for Floyd (2-15).

Dimmitt 57, Muleshoe 40 — The Bobcats led 20-2 at the quarter and pulled into a tie with Brownfield for the District 3-3A lead with their win at Muleshoe.

Seniors Gabriel Ontiveros and Raul Cadena led a balanced attack for Dimmitt (15-8, 7-2) with 11 and 10 points, respectively. For the Mules (6-13, 2-7), sophomore Sebastian Kirven tallied 10 points.

Vega 83, Bovina 26 — In District 3-2A at Bovina, the Longhorns (7-9, 3-2) put 10 players in the scoring column and cruised behind 24 points from senior Ryan Grawunder.

For the Mustangs (4-14, 1-4), senior Angel Lara notched eight points.
