Steers bounce back with win over Vega

FARWELL — The Farwell Steers bounced back from a heartbreaking one-point loss at Olton a day earlier to beat Vega 63-44 on Friday night in District 3-2A boys action.

Leading by seven at halftime, the Steers outscored Vega 18-10 in the third frame to take control.

Seniors Leo Nunez and Juan Gaxiola scored 14 points apiece for Farwell (21-5, 3-1), while senior Ryan Grawunder topped Vega (6-9, 2-2) with 20 points.

In other Friday boys contests:

Lamesa 57, Muleshoe 56 — The Tornadoes rallied from a nine-point deficit for a District 3-3A triumph at Muleshoe.

Junior Luke Martinez scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half, helping Lamesa (18-8, 4-3) outscored the Mules 31-21 in that time. Senior Jude Ray added 10 points.

For Muleshoe (6-12, 2-6), sophomore Sebastian Kirven compiled a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and junior Irvin Torres added 13 points.

Dora 57, Floyd 32 — At Dora, the Coyotes built a 15-point halftime lead and pulled away from there for a District 4-1A victory over the Broncos.

Junior Steven Masini compiled 27 points and 17 rebounds for Dora (10-7, 2-0), all in the first three quarters. Senior Ricky Ramirez finished with 11 points for the Bronchos (2-13, 0-2).

Olton 91, Bovina 38 — The District 3-2A-leading Mustangs got 11 3-pointers from five players and put six players in double figures at Bovina.

Junior Jake Soliz had three 3-pointers and 21 points for Olton (24-3, 4-0), while senior Joe Conchola added 14 points, senior Chris Urbina 12, sophomore Jimmy Munoz 11 and senior Alex Santillan and sophomore Nathan Urbina 10 apiece. Munoz also had three 3-pointers, while both Urbinas added two.

For Bovina (4-13, 1-3), junior Caesar Amaya collected 13 points.

In Friday area girls action:

Farwell 59, Vega 44 — The Lady Blue did a lot of its damage early, building a 24-7 lead after one quarter.

Nine players scored for Farwell, led by juniors Jaelyn Smith with 13 and Charlie May Trimble with 11. The Lady Longhorns’ top scorer was junior Kami Drinnon with 14 points.

Dora 53, Floyd 17 — Sophomore Faith Jasso scored 21 points and Dora pulled away in the second half in District 4-1A.

Junior Jenna Ramirez added 10 points for the Lady Coyotes (10-7, 1-1). Sophomore Jona Baros had 13 points for the Lady Bronchos (1-11, 0-2).

Olton 54, Bovina 41 — At Bovina, the Fillies got off to a fast start and still led by two points at halftime before the Lady Mustangs (9-10, 4-2) took control with an 18-6 third-quarter surge.

Junior Kylee Noack scored 19 points to lead three Olton players in double figures. Freshman Analise Ramage added 15 and senior Shaylee Leathers 10.

For Bovina (9-12, 1-4), junior Alyssa Marquez had 15 points while senior Pilly Saenz scored 10.
