Lady Wolverines turn back Jal

JAL — Junior Catelyn Breshears and sophomore Kaya New combined for 31 points Monday night as Texico’s girls posted a 48-35 non-district win over Jal.

Breshears had 16 points and New added 12 as the Lady Wolverines (6-10) rolled to a 37-15 halftime advantage.

The High scorer for the Lady Panthers (4-16) was junior Leilani Sauceda with 15 points.

In area boys games on Monday:

Gateway Christian 45, Floyd 23 — At Roswell, the host Warriors held Floyd to seven first-half points in a District 6-1A matchup.

Senior Luke Tipton scored 17 points and senior Caleb Bogle added 11 for Gateway (2-13, 1-1 district), while senior Hugo Diaz led the Broncos (2-13, 0-2) with nine points.

Jal 62, Texico 37 — The Panthers stretched out a nine-point lead with a 26-point fourth quarter to turn back the Wolverines.

Four players scored in double digits for Jal (13-3), led by senior Andres Lujan with 19 points. Meantime, senior Rogello Carreon tallied 14 points, junior Jacob Lujan had 13 and junior Uly Cervantes contributed 12.

For Texico (10-6), junior Jahvon Askew scored 19 points and sophomore Cade Figg added 10.

In area girls games on Saturday:

Grady 50, San Jon 40 — Freshman Juanita Ramirez scored 10 of her 14 points in the fourth quarter to help the host Lady Bronchos (7-11, 1-4 District 6-1A) break away from a tie game against the Lady Coyotes.

Sophomore Shaylee White scored all 13 of her points in the first half for Grady, while sophomore Taylor Foote finished with 11. For San Jon (4-7, 0-3), senior Chantzee Elliott collected 21 points.

Melrose 39, Alamo Navajo 22 — In a neutral-court matchup at Vaughn, sophomore Graci Odom tallied 12 points and junior Isabelle Sena 10 as the Lady Buffs (10-6) opened a 12-2 lead at the quarter against Alamo Navajo.

Freshman Sapphira Sandoval topped the Lady Cougars (8-8) with seven points.

Santa Rosa 48, Texico 32 — At Texico, the Lady Lions (11-7, 2-0 District 6-2A) took control with a 20-9 lead at halftime.

Senior Anica Lucero led Santa Rosa with 11 points, while Breshears paced the Lady Wolverines (0-2 district) with 10.

In boys action on Saturday:

Melrose 73, Alamo Navajo 33 — At Vaughn, the Buffaloes opened a 47-10 halftime lead and made short work of the Cougars (6-11).

Senior Logan DeVaney had 12 points and freshman Braden Eldridge 10 for Melrose (11-4), which got points from 13 players. Sophomore Jacob Apachito led all scorers, finishing with 19 points for Alamo Navajo.

Texico 46, Santa Rosa 34 — The host Wolverines erased a five-point halftime deficit, outscoring Santa Rosa 18-6 in the third period as freshman Alex Fuentes scored seven of his 10 points during that stretch.

Senior Brayden Bender also finished with 10 points for Texico (2-0 district). Junior Andres Madrid pace the Lions (10-9, 0-2) with nine points.
