Firefighters battle blaze at grain elevator

CLOVIS -- Units from four fire departments Tuesday afternoon were assisting the Clovis Fire Department in fighting a blaze contained in ductwork near the top of the Gavilon grain elevator at 1327 U.S. 60-84.

Curry County Sheriff's deputies were rerouting traffic off of U.S. 60-84 both east and west of the fire scene.

It wasn't clear how the fire began, but it still had life late Tuesday afternoon.

Clovis Fire Chief Mike Nolen said spray from a water cannon atop a ladder truck could not reach the base of the fire about 110 feet off the ground, but fire crews kept spraying the area below.

"We're just trying to keep it as cool as we can until it's safe to send personnel inside," he said.

Beside Clovis, fire units from Melrose, Texico, Ranchvale and Cannon Air Force Base responded.

Curry County Sheriff's deputies, meanwhile, were rerouting traffic off of U.S. 60-84 both east and west of the fire scene.

Officials said the fire was reported between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Tuesday.
