Eastern New Mexico is in line for widespread light snow, freezing temperatures and gusty winds Tuesday night and early Wednesday.

The National Weather Service is forecasting 1 to 3 inches of snow for the Clovis-Portales area, with low temperatures in the teens and winds up to 25 mph.

Forecasters on Monday said local chances of snow are 60 percent for Tuesday night. Accumulations of snow are expected to be higher to the north.

“The combination of widespread light snow with much colder temperatures and gusty winds will increase the threat of very slick travel conditions along parts of I-25 and I-40, especially over eastern NM Tuesday night,” NWS stated in a special weather statement.

“There is still some uncertainty with this storm system,” but NWS stated the Sangre de Cristo Mountains could see up to 6 inches of snow by Wednesday morning.

The area’s chances of precipitation drop off considerably after Wednesday morning and temperatures are expected to gradually warm into the low 60s by Saturday.
