New COVID-19 cases drop over reporting period

SANTA FE — Following a four-day weekend with 246 new cases of COVID-19, Curry County had a slight reprieve the remainder of the week with 96 new cases over three days of reporting.

During that same time, Roosevelt County confirmed 40 cases and one of the 86 deaths reported by the New Mexico Department of Health.

The state did not release a case report Friday due to the New Years Eve holiday. The DOH’s Monday report will incorporate four days of testing results, just as the prior Monday did with Christmas Eve on the prior Friday.

According to the daily updates supplied by the DOH:

• Tuesday saw the state confirm 799 new cases of COVID-19, with 24 in Curry county and 16 in Roosevelt County. The 22 deaths announced included a Roosevelt County male in his 60s who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

• Wednesday saw a 1,371-case day for New Mexico, with 41 cases in Curry County and 21 in Roosevelt County. Of Curry’s 41 cases, 39 were from Clovis’ 88101 ZIP code to place the area fifth among all New Mexico ZIP codes for case counts. None of the 33 deaths reported statewide came from Curry or Roosevelt counties.

• Thursday included 2,209 cases reported statewide, with 31 in Curry County and three in Roosevelt county. A total of 26 deaths were reported, bringing the total to 5,855. The state reported a 13.8% test positivity rate over seven days, up from 9.4% on Dec. 23.
