Lady Cats' Ledezma wins 138-pound title

ROSWELL — Senior Yazmean Ledezma took first place in the 138-pound division, helping Clovis High’s girls to a sixth-place team finish in Friday’s Rio Grande Invite wrestling tournament, hosted by Roswell High.

The Lady Wildcats finished with 37 team points. Rio Rancho Cleveland took first place in the 19-school competition with 127 points, while Roswell Goddard was second at 96.

Ledezma won by second-period pin over Mayfield’s Vania Garcia Aguirre and by first-period pin over Mayfield’s Mia Aguilera in her next two bouts before defeating Santa Fe High’s Alana Juarez-Acevedo 7-5 in her final-round match.

Also for the girls, sophomore Kate Joslin placed fourth at 114 pounds, losing by second-period fall to Goddard’s Yaretzi Palma in the final round, and eighth-grader Zulehiny Mendoza took fifth place at 120, topping Goddard’s Esmerelda Meras by first-period pin in her final-round outing.

A total of 23 teams participated in boys competition in the tournament, but boys team scores were not available as of press time on Tuesday.

Wins for the Wildcats came from freshman Johnny Martinez, a second-period pin against Ruidoso’s Brantley Tercero at 182 in the opening round; senior Nehemiah Gonzales at 170, a 14-9 decision over Goddard’s Logan Martinez in a consolation-round matchup, and junior Semaj Satcher, a consolation-round pin in the second period against Seth Johnson of Artesia.

“It was the first time being exposed to this large of an event,” CHS wrestling coach Eric Zottneck said. “This tournament gave us a lot of experience that we need moving forward.”

The Cats and Lady Cats are slated to return to action in the two-day Randall Invite at Canyon, Texas, scheduled for Dec. 30-31.
