Lady Cats pull away late against Artesia

ARTESIA - Clovis High's girls led most of the way in Tuesday night's matchup against Artesia, but it took a while before the game was safely in hand.

Junior guard/post Ali Thomas scored a personal-best 20 points, and the Lady Wildcats opened it up down the stretch to post a 51-36 victory over the Lady Bulldogs and improve to 4-1 for the season.

"Ali really stepped it up this game for us," CHS girls coach Jeff Reed said. "By far, it was her best game of the year."

Clovis hit a trio of 3-pointers in the first quarter, but Artesia was able to hang around until a 10-0 run spanning the third and fourth segments broke it open.

"We came out on fire, but we let them hang around," Reed said. "We just couldn't pull away from them and finish it.

"We'd get a lead of six, eight, 10 points and let them back in."

Senior guard Yvonne Fuerte added a pair of 3-pointers and 10 points for the Lady Cats. Meantime, Artesia (2-4) got nearly half its points (17) from junior guard Koda Beltran, who also had three of the team's four 3-point baskets.
