40 calves killed in truck crash

TEXICO - Traffic was disrupted much of Thursday afternoon, and some of Thursday evening, as a semi hauling cattle overturned just south of Texico.

No people were injured in the incident, but Curry County Sheriff Wesley Waller estimated 40 animals died out of the total haul of 101 calves.

The sheriff's office was assisted by the New Mexico State Police and Department of Transportation, along with state livestock inspectors and private citizens.

According to Waller:

• A dash-cam recording from the semi showed a silver in color sports utility vehicle swerved into the semi's lane. The driver of the semi, trying to avoid a collision, swerved. The semi ultimately left the roadway and overturned. It wasn't immediately clear if the SUV was located or could be identified from the dash cam footage.

• An area rancher aided county and state officials with temporary fencing to keep the livestock contained.

• An eastbound lane was reopened at around 9 p.m., with the investigation, livestock containment and cleanup lasting approximately eight hours.
