Matt Wells out as Tech football coach

LUBBOCK -- Texas Tech head football coach Matt Wells was fired Monday, effective immediately.

Tech Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt announced the change in leadership. Tech Offensive Coordinator Sonny Cumbie was named the interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Texas Tech is 5-3 this season, but calls for Wells' immediate ouster began after Saturday’s 25-24 loss to Kansas State. Tech led 24-10 at halftime of that game.

The Red Raiders would be eligible for a post-season bowl game with just one more win, but their final four games are against nationally ranked teams.

Wells is 13-17 since coming to Tech. The Red Raiders are 7-16 in Big 12 play under his direction.

Tech officials said Hocutt will address the media at 5 p.m. (CDT) Monday in a press conference that will air live on TexasTech.com as well as via the athletics department's main social media and YouTube channels.
