Buffs, Foxes renew rivalry in 8-man District 2 clash

MELROSE - The Melrose Buffaloes had an easy time in winning their first two games of the season by a combined score of 148-0.

Slated to host Pine Hill on Saturday, the Buffs wasted no effort to get to 3-0. Melrose was awarded a forfeit win when the Warriors were unable to field a team for the game.

The Buffs expect a much stiffer test on Friday when they welcome Fort Sumner (4-0, 1-0 8-man District 2) for a 7 p.m. contest in their district lidlifter.

The Foxes got past district rival Tatum in their season opener 52-50, but have since cruised to three consecutive wins by a combined score of 172-18.

During the COVID-shortened spring campaign, the Foxes handed Melrose its only loss, posting a 44-16 victory at Fort Sumner.

"It's just going to be a game decided by who makes the fewest mistakes and who shows up ready," Buffs coach Caleb King said. "This is going to be one of those rivalry games, so it should be a good game. We've wanted to play them again after they beat us (in the spring).

"It's going to be a really good game."

Farwell visits Sundown - The Steers posted a 7-4 record last season, but two of the setbacks were at the hands of the Roughnecks, including a first-round Class 2A Division I playoff tilt.

This time, the Steers are off to a 4-0 start while Sundown has split its first four contests, including a season-opening 33-14 setback at Muleshoe.

"They're really big," Farwell coach Darren Kelley said of the Roughnecks. "They've got most of their offensive line back from last year, and also their quarterback and running back."

Farwell's impressive start has been led by sophomore running back Corey Stancell, who has 942 yards rushing and 17 touchdowns through four games.

"The biggest thing is we have to be able to control the ball," Kelley said. "We've got to keep running it like we have been."

Other area games on Friday send Texico (1-3) to Eunice (3-1), Clovis Christian (1-1, 1-0 6-man District 2) to Elida (2-3, 1-1), Vega (3-1) to Bovina (1-3) and Muleshoe (2-2) to Seminole (1-3).

Eagles blank Floyd for first victory - Junior Kimber Barnett scored a pair of touchdowns and the Eagles, playing for the first time since a season-opening loss to Ramah, cruised to a 53-0 victory over the Broncos (0-2, 0-2 district) on Saturday in their district opener at Floyd.

Six others scored a touchdown apiece for CCS, which broke the scoring ice on a 62-yard punt return by senior Noah Gershon early in the first quarter. Sophomore quarterback Jaden Martinez threw for three TDs, and the game ended early in the third quarter on the 50-point lead rule.

Early injuries for the Broncos (0-2, 0-2) to their starting quarterback and running back hurt their cause.

CCS coach Trent McKay was happy to get back into action.

"It's (layoff from games) been good for us in a lot of ways, to be able to figure some things out," he said. "Hopefully, it'll be nice to get to play every week from now on."
