Portales fiesta Sunday afternoon

PORTALES — Lindsey Park will play host this afternoon and evening to longtime Portales neighborhood tradition.

The Fiesta de Familias will run 2 p.m.-9 p.m., marking the first running of the event since 2019. The event was not held last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The fiesta began in 1992 when Dolores Penrod and her protégé, Pilar Moreno, came up with a way for families to take back Lindsey Park from gang activity with a day of free activities.

The celebration has, other than 2020, been held on the Sunday closest to Sept. 16, Mexican Independence Day. The event has been held at the park, or the Memorial Building in the event of inclement weather.

This year’s event includes a cornhole tournament, car show, three-on-three basketball tournament, community resource fair, piñata, face painting, and free food. Musical acts scheduled are Mariachi Los Galleros, Grupazo Rosa Blanca & DJ Vatos Locos.
