PORTALES - Freshman midfielder Danielle Gonzales delivered her first collegiate goal in the 58th minute on Sunday, breaking a scoreless tie and propelling Fort Lewis to a 2-0 victory over Eastern New Mexico University in women's soccer at Greyhound Stadium.
Junior midfielder Madyson Barela added her third tally of the campaign with just over 14 minutes remaining to give the Skyhawks (2-2) some insurance. Junior Katherine Dunbabin postedd the shutout in goal for Fort Lewis.
FLC was credited with 17 total shots to just seven for ENMU (2-2), but the Greyhounds had a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Gonzales broke the scoreless tie when she sailed a free kick past ENMU goalkeeper Whitney Dockweiler and into the top right corner of the goal. Barela's goal was also an unassisted tally.
The Hounds complete a season-opening, five-match stretch against Colorado-based Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams on Sunday when they collide with Metropolitan State in a noon start in Denver. Next Wednesday, they open Lone Star Conference play at home with a noon clash with Texas Woman's.
Hounds drop finale in round-robin - The ENMU volleyball team gave it a run against No. 22 Colorado Mesa on Saturday in its finale in Midwestern State's Hampton Inn-vitational at Wichita Falls, Texas, but in the end the Mavericks posted a 23-25, 25-17, 25-22. 25-20 victory over the Greyhounds.
ENMU finished 0-3 in the four-team, round-robin event, and fell to 0-7 for the season. Senior outside hitter Jasmine Gannon of Texico and sophomore middle blocker Gracelyn Stubbs represented the Hounds on the all-tournament team.
Gannon posted a double-double for ENMU with team highs of 16 kills and 13 digs, while Stubbs had 10 kills. Sophomore setter Qitana Sapiga had 19 assists while her sister, junior setter Rae Sapiga, notched 10 assists to pass the 1,000 mark in her 223rd career set at ENMU.
At 23-23, kills by junior middle blocker Jordan O'Connor-Dempsey and freshman outside hitter Mikaela Garvin finished off the first set for the Hounds.
Mesa overcame an early 2-0 deficit in Game 2 with an 8-1 run and eventually building a 20-10 cushion. Then the Mavericks used an early 9-1 run for a seven-point lead in the third set, and held on late after ENMU got within 24-22.
Garvin had three kills and teamed up with O'Connor-Dempsey for a block to start Game 4, but the Mavericks came back to slowly take control and finished the set and match on a 4-1 run.
Freshman outside hitter Sydney Leffler posted 17 kills for the Mavericks. Meantime, ENMU got nine kills and four block assists from Garvin, while freshman defensive specialist/libero Grace Ramirez contributed 10 digs.
ENMU begins Lone Star Conference on Wednesday with a 5 p.m. (MDT) match at Texas A&M- Commerce.
