ROSWELL — A long night finally came to an end on Tuesday, and Portales High’s volleyball team was on the wrong side of the scoreboard.

Roswell High overcame a 2-1 deficit in games, dominating the last two sets to post a 25-22, 19-25, 23-25, 25-15, 15-10 victory over the Lady Rams.

First-year PHS coach Jacki Bailey said her squad gave the Class 5A Lady Coyotes (3-3) all they could handle.

“I feel like we played hard,” Bailey said. “The effort wasn’t a question, but we didn’t play with a lot of discipline in the final two sets.”

Senior outside hitter Kylyie Paden notched 14 kills and six blocks for Portales (5-2), with senior libero Teagan Faust collecting 25 digs in the match.

Bailey said the Lady Rams were challenged to try to match Roswell High in the front row.

“They were strong at the net, both in blocking and hitting,” she said. “They were one of the stronger teams we’ve played this year.”

She said the competition was good for her squad.

“We need to play good teams and we need to be more disciplined,” she said. “We’ll take these early losses and learn from them.”

Portales returns to action with matches on Tuesday at Ruidoso and on Thursday against Carlsbad at the RAC.

Artesia 3, Clovis 0 (Tuesday) — At Artesia, the Lady Wildcats nearly held their own with the Class 4A second-ranked Lady Bulldogs, except for one thing — and her name was Cora Cox.

The 5-foot-10 senior outside hitter kept Artesia (5-1) in control as the Lady Bulldogs topped CHS for the second time this season.

“They’ve got that one big girl, and she’s just a difference-maker,” Clovis coach Darrel Ray said of Cox.

The Lady Cats (1-5) hung with Artesia for most of the first set, but in the end just couldn’t keep up the pace.

Senior outside hitter Cady Ratledge and junior defensive specialist Zada Petner led Clovis with four kills apiece. Senior libero Hannah Gallegos had 12 digs, while junior setter Ella Howalt collected 13 assists.

The Lady Cats were slated to play the Zia Classic over the weekend in Roswell, with pool play scheduled for Friday and bracket play on Saturday.
