Roosevelt fair to include new events, rides

PORTALES — The Roosevelt County Fair this year will include several new events, including seven new carnival rides, said fair board president Sheila Hays.

The fair runs from August 17th through the 22nd at the fairgrounds in Portales.

This is the first time the fair will be held since 2019 before COVID and “we’re super excited about this,” Hays said. “We’re so glad to have this to offer to the community again. It will be great to have everyone in the community come and enjoy themselves at the fair.”

Coach J’s BBQ and RC-Q present the 1st Annual BBQ Cook Off will be held on Friday and Saturday. The proceeds will go to United Way and Relay For Life.

Thursday is “Military Appreciation Night” and the children of the military get in free from 5 p.m. to midnight, according to Hays. On Wednesday, everyone gets in at half price. All events, except the rides, are included in the daily $8 admission for adults and $6 for children under 12 years of age.

Sunday is Fiesta Day featuring Luis Sanchez and the Del Norte Band, she said. The carnival rides will be open from Wednesday through Sunday. Team roping will be held on Wednesday night and barrel racing on Friday.

The Blackwater Band will perform on Thursday night and on Wednesday night, a Praise and Worship service will be held. The Justin Kemp Band will take to the stage on Wednesday. Joe Trevino will perform on Saturday night.

On Friday night, Chad Cooke will perform country western music, she said.

People can sit on the bleachers and in the covered picnic area to enjoy the fair food, she said. “All the fun fair foods such as smoked turkey legs, corn on the cob and funnel cakes will be on sale.”

On Tuesday, a 4-H pork chop breakfast will be held in the Jake Lopez Building and at 4 p.m. the swine show will take place, according to the fair schedule. On Wednesday at 1 p.m., the goat show will be held and at 5 p.m., there will be a lamb show. Both will take place at the events center. Friday is Junior Livestock Sale Day.

On Thursday, seniors 65 years of age and older get in free from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
