Ice cream, fireworks may be just what we need

It’s Independence Day and we have a lot to celebrate.

This past 18 months has really taught us all just how important independence is to us all. We got just a little taste of what it would be like to live without independence and freedom.

We’ve too long taken our freedom for granted. We live in one of the richest and privileged societies in the world. We want for very little and we do what we want to do when we want to do it — most of the time.

For lots of folks in this area being told they couldn’t go to work or that they had to wear a mask and even forego church services was several steps over the line.

Working with lots of business people it was hard to watch what they experienced. Some of these people are the type of people I like to say put the independent in independent business.

They do things their way, even if that’s not the way the Business 101 textbook explains it. Watching them being broken by our own government was one of the hardest parts of this pandemic.

I have faith in our country’s way of doing things and I think that deep down we’re all more alike than we want to admit right now. If that’s not true we are in trouble.

I think there is always a political price to pay for government over reach or poor leadership and governance. It doesn’t matter which side, it always happens.

Our country has become more divided than I remember in my lifetime. But I truly believe that we’re all still alike. We like our independence, we love our family and friends and we need to make sure that political differences never change that basic quality that all Americans possess.

Pop off some firecrackers, burn some burgers, eat some watermelon or ice cream. Those are all some things we can agree we have in common. Maybe ice cream, burgers and fireworks is just what we needed about now.
