Artesia overpowers Lady Rams

ARTESIA — Facing a team ranked third in the entire state of New Mexico (all classes), Portales High found itself overmatched on Tuesday night in District 4-4A.

Host Artesia improved to 15-1 (8-0 district) with a 17-0, 14-0 sweep of PHS, both games ending early on the run rule.

The Lady Bulldogs scored 11 runs in the second inning of the opener, then added their final tallies on a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth. That ended it on the 15-run rule which goes into effect after the third inning.

The nightcap went 4 1/2 innings, with Artesia scoring in each of its four turns at bat.

Portales (2-12, 1-7) managed a pair of singles in the opener, one each by junior Adrianna Garcia and sophomore Kenzee Rowland. The Lady Rams had four hits in the second game, with sophomore Alivia Gonzales finishing 2-for-2 while Rowland and freshman Becky Hinderliter each went 1-for-2.

The Lady Rams were slated to visit Lovington for a district twin bill on Saturday. Their next outing is on Tuesday, when they welcome Roswell Goddard for a 4:30 p.m. doubleheader at Wheeler Park in their home finale.
