Eunice outlasts Texico

EUNICE — The Texico Wolverines tasted defeat for the first time this season on Monday, falling to Eunice 10-7 in a battle of Class 2A state championship contenders.

Texico (7-1) led briefly 3-2 with two runs in the top of the third, but the Cardinals (8-1) scored four times in the home fourth to take a 7-3 advantage. The four-time defending 2A champion Wolverines evened the score with four in the sixth, but a run-scoring single and a two-run homer put Eunice back in control in the bottom half.

Senior David Davalos went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored for Texico, while senior Logan Bowman hit a game-tying, two-run single to cap the Wolverines’ sixth-inning comeback.

Texico has a return match with the Cardinals in the form of a 4 p.m. doubleheader at Texico on June 14.

In Saturday’s District 6-2A opening twin bill, the Wolverines had no such problems, stomping Clayton 19-0 and 23-1 in a pair of games at Texico shortened to 4 1/2 innings by the 10-run rule.

Senior Josh Myers and freshman Kyle Gonser combined on a one-hitter in the opener, and Texico broke it open with 14 runs in the bottom of the second. Davalos led a 14-hit Wolverines attack, going 3-for-3 with a single, a double, a triple and three RBIs.

In Game 2, the Wolverines tallied 10 times in the first inning and pounded out a whopping 25 hits. Senior Seth Bailey led the way, going 4-for-5 with a triple and four RBIs.

Senior Anton Goins, Bowman and Bailey shared mound duties for the Wolverines, allowing a combined five hits. Goins had five strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings, and Bowman finished with four in 1 2/3 frames.

Texico was slated to host district rival Santa Rosa in a single game on Tuesday, then welcomes Pecos for a 1 p.m. 6-2A twin bill on Friday.
