Wolverines notch 14-2 win over Warriors

TEXICO — Senior David Davalos clubbed a pair of two-run homers in Texico’s nine-run third, and the Wolverines baseball team improved to 4-0 for the season with a 14-2 rout of Gateway Christian on Thursday at Texico.

Leading 2-0, Texico’s third-inning eruption put the game completely out of reach. Davalos finished 2-for-2 with a walk and a hit-by pitch, while senior Gabe Bailey was 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.

The Warriors (2-2) broke through in the top of the fourth on a two-run single by junior Jeremiah Dickman, but Texico added three more in the bottom of the frame. The game was halted after 4 1/2 innings on the 10-run rule.

Senior Seth Griego went 1-for-2 with an RBI double, two walks and three runs scored, while senior Josh Myers was 1-for-2 with a two-run single and a pair of walks.

Senior Freddy Davalos pitched the first three innings for Texico, allowing no hitsd with no walks and five strikeouts, while senior Anton Goins worked the fourth and fifth, issuing two walks and allowing two hits and two runs with two strikeouts.

The Wolverines return to action on Monday with a 5 p.m. home game against Portales.

Texico girls capture Dexter Invite golf title — At Roswell, the Lady Wolverines continued to roll as the Lady Wolverines captured another title on Thursday, winning the Dexter Invite in an event played at the New Mexico Military Golf Course.

Texico ran away with the three-team competition, posting a score of 366 to 412 for Clovis High and 426 for the host Lady Demons.

Meantime, Clovis Christian finished a strong second in the boys’ portion of the meet, shooting a team tally of 325 to Lovington’s 295. Clovis was third at 362 and Tucumcari fourth at 489.

Senior Emily DelaRosa put together a personal-best round of 37-43 — 80, which is also the top individual score for the Lady Wolverines this season. Seniors Grace McDaniel (46-43 — 89) and Libby Douma (45-47 — 92) were fourth and fifth overall.

For Clovis, sophomore Jolei Atkins carded her best round of the campaign at 41-46 — 87 to finish third overall.

“She hadn’t played that well in the past three tournaments, so it was good to see her put up a good score,” CHS girls coach Joe Dvozenja said.

On the boys’ side, Class 4A Lovington and Class 5A Hobbs remain the only teams to get the better of the Class 1A CCS boys this season. Freshman Noah McKay led the Eagles’ usual balanced scorecard, posting a round of 37-42 — 79.

All five CCS players shot 85 or better.

“It was a normal day for us; everybody was bunched up,” said CCS coach Trent McKay, who is also Noah’s dad. “It’s just a matter of who’s the top scorer that day.”

Clovis got a strong performance from junior Taylor Martin, who finished at 3-over par 38-37 — 75 to tie for third in the tourney. Senior Ryan Rowley followed for the Wildcats with an 87.

“Taylor finally played decent,” Cats coach Dale Fullerton said. “The greens were real fast. Ryan played real well until the final hole when he hit a tree and took a triple-bogey. But he really hit the ball good today.”

Clovis teams, along with the Portales High and CCS boys and Texico girls, return to action on Monday in the Clovis Christian Invite, scheduled for a 9 a.m. start at Colonial Park Golf Course.
