Former Clovis Wildcat honored

ROSWELL — Malik Phillips’ first two college kickoff returns were pretty big ones, and the National Junior College Athletic Association certainly took note.

After a 174-yard performance May 1, the former Clovis Wildcat and New Mexico Military Institute freshman was named the special teams player of the week for the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Phillips started things off quickly in the Broncos’ 66-21 win over Tyler Junior College, returning the opening kickoff 80 yards to the Apache 10. The Broncos did not score on the drive, but did little else wrong in jumping out to a 31-0 lead after the first quarter.

On his only other kickoff return of the game, Phillips finished things off himself with a 94-yard touchdown run in the fourth.
