Opinion: Dem governor, lawmakers can't face truth

When Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham penned her name to Senate Bill 10, she signed a death warrant. She, along with dozens of New Mexico Democratic lawmakers, approved the order to end the lives of thousands of unborn children.
The new law is an immoral, dangerous one -- a law that allows late-term abortion and offers no protections for girls, women or health professionals. It permits the murder of the unborn, endangers the health and lives of women and eliminates any conscience provision to allow a doctor to opt out if he or she opposes the procedure on moral, ethical or religious grounds.
Just as noteworthy, is the hypocritical behavior of some lawmakers as they addressed this important legislation. As senators hashed over the bill, debating life-and-death decisions, the Right to Life Committee of Lea County distributed models of 12-week-old fetuses to all of the senators. The visual aids hit home-hard.
Democratic State Senator Jacob Candelaria was seen on the floor, crying out “I threw it away, threw it right in the trash, right in the trash. Why? It's offensive!”
The group Live Action reported on Candelaria's response on the Senate floor. It also mentioned other lawmakers who called the fetuses “repulsive,” “terrifying,” and “disgusting.”
There's your irony: models of the aborted babies are described as repulsive, but the violence done to a live human being is somehow not considered to be offensive.
It seems these pro-choice lawmakers have actually tried to convince themselves that unborn children are not recognizably human. Then, once confronted with true images of these unborn, they see for themselves a pre-born child's humanity. A living being, a human form, a person. The senators were forced to not just look, but to truly see.
The governor is deluding herself as well. And she knows it. In 21 days one can hear the heartbeat of the unborn. Like the models show, at 12 weeks the fingers, toes and all appendages are formed. The pro-choice senators have turned their heads from the truth of the humanity of the victims of abortion. They've ignored these immoral and appalling acts. By discarding the real life-sized images, they actually admit their position is too awful to face.
The lawmakers were offended, as they should be, and that's a start. Maybe they will continue to think about the image, and finally they might subconsciously recognize their own hypocrisies and denials.
It's good that they're offended. Their vote for this bill demonstrates they have deliberately blinded themselves from the truth. That is sad. That is wrong. That is tragic.
It's unfortunate that the governor and lawmakers continue to insist on deceiving themselves. But perhaps, hopefully, the model fetuses did plant a seed, and we can only pray that this seed will sprout a conscience, righteousness, justice and a love for life for these lawmakers and the governor. A pre-born child deserves to be recognized and, above all, to live.
