Three arrested after shootout with police

Nobody injured in Wednesday incident

PORTALES — Three people were arrested Wednesday night following an evening shootout with law enforcement at a Portales residence.

Jordan Venegas, 21, Manuel Venegas, 19, and a 17-year-old male were arrested in the incident. Both Jordan and Manuel Venegas are being held at the Roosevelt County Detention Center on charges of aggravated assault upon a peace officer. Jordan Venegas also faces a charge of aggravated assault.

Both Jordan and Manuel Venegas are due for a first appearance Monday at Roosevelt County Magistrate Court. No attorney is listed for either in court records.

Nobody was hit with gunfire during the exchange.

According to a release from Portales Police Department Sgt. Nickolas Laurenz:

• The PPD was contacted at 7:37 p.m. by a man who reported people were shooting at him. According to an arrest warrant affidavit, the man reported that Jordan Venegas shot at his van.

• An investigation led detectives to the Alta Tierra apartment complex nearly four hours later. When detectives knocked, occupants made verbal threats of force. The detectives backed away while they waited for backup. During that time, shots were fired from inside the residence and a male subject exited the residence and fired at the officers with a long gun.

A detective returned fire, which caused the subject to return to the apartment. The detective took cover and continued to take fire.

• The subjects inside the residence called police dispatch and exited the residence to be arrested without further incident. A search warrant was executed on the residence, and a pair of long guns were recovered.
