MULESHOE — Six people were taken to area hospitals Wednesday afternoon following a Muleshoe school bus crash near the Parmer-Bailey County line on U.S. 84.
The most serious injury appears to have been to a passenger in a red sport utility vehicle that collided with the bus. The Lubbock Avalanche Journal reported Jaynee Bibbs was taken by helicopter to University Medical Center in Lubbock with "incapacitating injuries." Her condition was not known late last week.
The driver of the SUV, Latisha Bibbs, was taken to the Muleshoe hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Muleshoe schools Superintendent R.L. Richards said three students were taken to area hospitals with possible arm injuries "just to be checked out." The Muleshoe school bus driver was having abdominal pains and was taken to the hospital in Muleshoe, he said. All had been released by Thursday morning, Richards said.
Richards said the SUV was traveling east toward Muleshoe when it crossed the median, hit a highway sign and ended up in the westbound lane where it crashed into the side of the westbound school bus.
The wreck happened just after noon CST inside Bailey County, about two miles from the Parmer County line. Richards said students were let out early Wednesday for parent-teacher conferences scheduled in the afternoon.
Richards said two of the students were taken to the Clovis hospital for treatment and one went to the Muleshoe hospital, along with the bus driver.
Three other students were on the bus; they appeared to be uninjured, Richards said.
Officials late last week were still investigating why the SUV driver appeared to lose control.
