Clovis teen sentenced to 15 years for shooting

CLOVIS -- A Clovis teenager on Thursday was sentenced to 15 years in state prison for a shooting that left two people injured in March.

Charges stemmed from a March 16, 2020, incident in which Saidreck Daniels, then 16, entered into a residence armed with an assault rifle, officials said. Daniels held the occupants of the residence hostage and fired multiple shots at officers when they arrived on scene. Daniels also shot the occupants of the home as they tried to escape. Police reports show a 31-year-old woman and 32-year-old man were hospitalized with gunshot wounds.

The incident happened in the 800 block of Oak Street.

Police reports showed multiple shots were fired and police used a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle to rescue the woman who was trapped outside the home after she'd been shot. The armored vehicle was parked between the victim and the shooter so the woman could be placed on a stretcher and taken to the hospital.

The incident lasted about two hours after police arrived. The teen's mother convinced him to surrender after he'd threatened suicide, reports show.

Daniels was prosecuted as an adult. "After multiple evaluations, Judge (Drew) Tatum determined that Daniels was not amenable to treatment as a juvenile and elected to impose an adult sanction," a news release from District Attorney Andrea Reeb stated.

“I saw very little remorse,” said Tatum at the sentencing hearing, “Mr. Daniels is extremely violent and the community must be protected.”

Chief Deputy District Attorney Brian Stover said Daniels entered into a plea agreement in the case in November. Stover said both shooting victims have recovered, though the woman remains in physical therapy for injuries near her spine.

Senior Trial Attorney Arwen Gaddis also assisted prosecutors.

Daniels was represented by Clovis attorney Michael Garrett.
