Enrollment period begins for Medicare

SANTA FE — The annual Medical general enrollment period has begun, and will continue through March 31, according to a release from the New Mexico Department of Aging and Long-term Services.

Seniors over age 65 who have not enrolled in Medicare when first eligible can sign up during this period. If this year’s enrollment period is missed, enrollment will not be available again until Jan. 1, 2022.

A Medicare Savings Program may help avoid penalties for late signups.

Anybody who wishes to apply is advised to check with their local Social Security Administration office for an application. They can also call the Aging and Disability Resource Center at 800-432-2080 for an application or to ask questions.

People who did not enroll in Medicare when they turned 65 may hesitate to sign up now because of penalties. Penalties can be avoided if one qualifies for a Medicare Savings Program (MSP). This is a partial Medicaid program, with income and asset guidelines, but if awarded the benefit it pays the monthly Part B premium and possibly copays and coinsurance (depending on eligibility), and it will also cover any penalties accrued by declining Part B in the past.
