Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Pages past, Dec. 23: Dear Santa, I want a Paladin gun

On this date …

1955: Eight teams from eight states and eight collegiate conferences were preparing to play in the eighth annual Sunshine Basketball Tournament at Eastern New Mexico University.

Teams included defending champion Fort Hays State College of Hays, Kan., the Bears of Arkansas State Teachers College and, for the first time, West Texas State College.

ENMU was hosting the tourney, hoping to get back on track following a six-game losing streak during a 10-day road trip.

1960: At least five prisoners were expected to spend Christmas Day in the Portales jail.

Roosevelt County Sheriff Leon Harris said the men could expect a traditional Christmas dinner with baked hen, dressing and cranberry sauce.

1970: Christmas Day liquor sales would be legal across New Mexico, despite the Legislature's intention otherwise.

State lawmakers had passed bills that would have prohibited alcohol sales on Christmas Day, but “The Christmas Liquor Sales Prohibition Act got mixed in with the controversy over Sunday sales, and was invalidated as a result,” The Associated Press reported.

Grab a bite …

1955: Portales' Mac's Drive In offered customers the chance to “Eat in your car as you are.”

Mac's specialties included enchiladas, tacos, taquitas and chili with hush puppies, French fries and cole slaw.

The phone number was 905.

Dear Santa,

1960: Darrell Mullins was 10 years old and in the fifth grade at Dora schools. He wanted a shotgun and ping-pong table for Christmas, plus some games.

Jimmie Mullins, 6, went to school at Rogers. He asked Santa for a Paladin gun, a compass ring or a compass flashlight. “Bring lots of candy, fruit and nuts to all the good boys and girls … and of course I want some,” he wrote.
