Six businesses awarded CARES Act money

PORTALES — Six local businesses and non-profits have been awarded nearly $60,000 in the first disbursement of CARES Act continuity grants through the Roosevelt County Small Business Grant Program.
The county began with $239,625 in available grant monies, and will continue to award up to $10,000 to entities depending on fund availability and business/nonprofit eligibility.
The recipients were Best Western Plus, Holiday Inn Express, Super 8, Sands Motel, Dawg Houz Packaging and the Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico. All awards were $10,000, with the exception of the food bank’s $9,996.68 award.
“We are thrilled to release the first wave of our small business grant assistance today,” County Manager Amber Hamilton said in a release. “I want to encourage any small business in Roosevelt County to explore this opportunity. We’ve begun processing the second group of applicants and hope to have the majority of the awards made by the end of the month.”
Eligible expenses for reimbursement include:
• Non-owner employee payroll
• Rent or scheduled mortgage payments
• Business redesign, including reconfiguring physical spaces, installing plexiglass barriers, personal protective equipment for employees, technology investments to facilitate remote work and temporary structures to mitigate COVID-19 spread.
Eligible businesses or nonprofits must have experienced business disruption due to the COVID-19 pandemic, have a physical location within Roosevelt County, have 100 or fewer employees (full time equivalent), annual revenues of no more than $5 million and 12 months of operation prior to March 1. Businesses may request an exemption for the 12-month requirement, but the county will make the final decision on the request.
The state has expanded the employee and revenue caps from 50 and $2 million, respectively.
