Pages past, Sept. 16: Greyhounds 'definitely the underdogs'

1975: Eastern New Mexico University had narrowed its list of candidates for president from 322 to six. Officials said they would keep the names confidential "to prevent any of the applicants from withdrawing," the Clovis News-Journal reported. Charles Meister had resigned earlier in the year as ENMU's fourth president. Warren Armstrong was ultimately selected as his successor.

1965: Eastern New Mexico University head football coach B.B. Lees said his team was focusing on goal-line stands and pass defense as it headed into its season-opener at Sul Ross State. "We're very definitely the underdogs, but we'll show them a jaw-to-jaw football game," Lees told reporters. Sul Ross won the game, 28-25.

1933: A Farm Holiday picnic in Forrest attracted about 600 people. The Tucumcari Daily News reported 4,000 to 5,000 had been expected, but many farmers were "too busy to attend because of working in wheat fields."

Hogging the spotlight

1975: Feed & Ranch Supplies of Clovis had purchased the grand champion market hog at the Curry County Fair. Texico's Joe West had raised the champ, which was on display in front of the First National Bank in Clovis.

1985: Play, Inc., had kicked off its football season with 10 teams - the Hawks, Bulldogs, Vikings, Indians, Rough Riders, Ponies, Bears, Hornets, Colts and Cowboys. Star players included Brett Harrison, Michael Thompson, Chad Roanhaus, Charlie Crisp, Randy Byrd and Derek Brumfield.
