Pages past, Sept. 9: The one for '51 was 'low to the road'

On this date ...

1975: Johnny Mitchum of Harrison, Arkansas, had captured the Old Fiddler Contest at the Roosevelt County Fair. Lorita Baldridge of Clovis had finished second and Dink Essary of Floyd had finished third. Their photos, with their fiddles, were on the front page of the Portales News-Tribune.

1970: Clovis school board officials had decided on names for the district's three newest elementary schools. Cameo and Lockwood were selected "because they are short" and those were the names of the streets on which the schools were located, the Clovis News-Journal reported. Barry Elementary, still a year away from completion, received that name as a provision in the school's acceptance of the land on which the school was being built.

1965: Portales Police Chief Lloyd Moore was warning residents of "street blocks" intended to identify faulty vehicle equipment. The chief said checks would be made in the vicinity of city schools but also at "unpredictable points" across Portales. Officers would be looking for faulty equipment such as loud mufflers and also checking for driver's licenses and for brake and light certificates.

'One for '51' ...

1950: Walker Motor Co., located at 220 E. First in Clovis, was announcing the arrival of the 1951 Packard automobile, deemed "the one for '51." The car's features included new "low to the road styling," "horizon-view visibility" and "stunning new roomier Fashion Forum interiors," according to an ad in the Clovis News-Journal. An open house was scheduled at the dealership from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. The phone number was 3511.

Sam's back ...

1945: Sam Johnson had returned as manager of Portales' Safeway store. Johnson had been manager at the Portales' grocery store before, but he was called into the Army on July 26, 1943. Mrs. Johnson and their little son Ronnie were expected to join Mr. Johnson once living quarters could be secured.
