CLOVIS - The Clovis school district is saying good-bye to its former Parkview Elementary, the last project on a summer session that saw about $1.6 million in work.
John King, deputy director of operations for Clovis Municipal Schools, anticipated the demolition work that began Monday would take four to five weeks.
The district opened a new Parkview building last year a few blocks east at 2501 14th St. The district attempted to find alternate uses for the facility on the 1100 block of Maple Street, most notably an offer for a future city senior center, but couldn't find a taker. The CMS Board of Education has not yet made any plans for the land.
The demolition comes at a cost of $195,000, and was preceded by $266,000 in abatement costs.
Other summer projects included various campus renovations, including:
• Flooring replacements at Mesa Elementary ($350,000) and Cameo Elementary ($405,000, also included concrete polishing).
• A fire alarm replacement on the Clovis High School campus ($402,000).
• A secure entry for Yucca Middle School ($49,000).
Regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, King said there were a few difficulties. Furniture move-outs at Cameo and Mesa to facilitate the flooring replacement took three to four times longer due to occupancy restrictions, and some maintenance projects just weren't feasible with social distancing requirements.
On the other side, King said there wasn't much opportunity to use the two months schools went online to get a headstart on summer projects because public health orders changed frequently and many of the projects were already under contract for the summer period.
Upcoming projects include flooring replacements and concrete polishing (Sandia, Zia, Yucca, partial CHS), renovations at Barry Elementary (classroom addition, roof/HVAC replacement), cameras at CHS and a roofing/HVAC replacement for the CHS "G" Building.
