On this date ...

1930: Portales’ canning factory had employed 50 women and girls to snip beans.

“Snipping beans is breaking off the stem ends, for which the snippers receive one cent per pound,” the Portales Valley News reported.

After they’re snipped, the beans are “run through the cutter and placed in cans for cooking,” the paper reported.
