1950: Law officers in Roosevelt and Chaves counties had to use a tape measure to determine who had the most jurisdiction in a case involving a stripped truck.

The cattle transport truck, operated by Price's Creameries of El Paso, had a flat and was pulled over, straddling the county lines.

The driver hitched a ride into Portales for help. When he returned, he found someone had stolen the truck's battery, fog and spot lights.

Investigators soon found the truck accessories in a nearby abandoned car that seemed stuck in the sand in a ditch. Evidence inside the car led officials to the suspected thief.

The tape measure showed more of the truck was in Chaves County than Roosevelt and so the prisoner was taken to Roswell to stand trial.
