CCC hears series of donations

CLOVIS — With the COVID-19 pandemic still keeping the Clovis Community College Board of Trustees meeting via web conference, the trustees did hear of a series of donations to help soften the blow the pandemic has caused.

President Charles Nwankwo, in his comments to the board Wednesday morning, noted two donations related to the pandemic and one larger general donation.

Among the donations were 23 laptops from the college’s foundation that will be loaned to students to help bridge the digital division and a $500 gift from Thomas Martin of Taco Box for the COVID-19 student emergency fund.

Also, Nwankwo noted the donation of a 2018 Chevrolet Camaro from the Bender family of dealerships, with the car intended to help train automotive students on up-to-date vehicles.

Nwankwo also noted the college was planning to reopen its fitness center and its cosmetology services Monday at 50% and 25% capacity, respectively, in accordance with state public health orders.

In other business at the meeting:

• Trina Walley, coordinator for the college’s TRIO program, gave a review of the program that serves 180 students. The program is in the last year of a five-year cycle, and Walley is waiting to hear on a grant application for the next five years.

• The board met in 35 minutes for executive session to discuss a personnel matter. Upon returning into open session, the board adjourned without taking any action.

• The next meeting is scheduled for 8 a.m. Aug. 5, tentatively in Room 512 of the college.
