Virtual graduation set for May 30
April 26, 2020
PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University’s spring graduation won’t be held at Greyhound Arena, but instead on TV and online.
The virtual ceremony is scheduled for May 30, the university announced last week.
University officials have been working on the ceremony for the last few weeks. The board of regents voted last month to postpone spring commencement services originally scheduled for May 9 due to COVID-19 pandemic concerns.
The virtual graduation will be broadcast statewide at 10 a.m. May 30 on KENW 3-1 and 3-2 and webcast from enmu.edu.
The ceremony will feature pre-recorded versions of the graduation ceremony staples — a singing of the national anthem and alma mater and remarks from the student body president, student regent, interim president, vice president for academic affairs and academic deans. Additionally, the program will feature photos submitted by graduates; instructions on submission were provided in an email sent to the school accounts of graduation candidates.
“Throughout the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, ENMU has focused on the safety of our students, our faculty and staff,” Interim President Patrice Caldwell said in a university statement. “In designing this event, we consulted with the campus community about how best to celebrate our graduating students. We hope it conveys our pride in our graduates and their accomplishments and creates a happy ENMU memory for them, their families and friends.”
Any spring graduate will also be provided the opportunity to walk during the fall 2020 ceremonies scheduled for Dec. 12.
