Hummingbirds ahead on show

Information on how enthusiasm is an indicator of life energy on a personal level, and attracting hummingbirds will be the featured topics on “Creative Living” 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and noon Thursday (all times Mountain).

Dorinda Fox is the President of Inner Peace Movement Int’l., and she says that we are energy and science tells us that energy can neither be created nor destroyed. It just changes form. She’ll talk about how enthusiasm is an indicator of life energy on a personal level. She’s from Albuquerque.

Ray Pawley is a retired curator with the Chicago Zoological Parks, and one of the species he managed was hummingbirds. He’s going to discuss the various species of hummingbirds, talk about feeding them and share the recipe he uses for attracting these tiny birds. He is from Hondo.

Information on adding more whole grains into your recipes, turning picture frames into jewelry cases, and updating window treatments will be the featured topics on “Creative Living” noon Tuesday and 2 p.m. Saturday.

Cindy Falk is with the Kansas Wheat Commission, and she’s going to show how simple it is to sneak whole grains into your favorite recipes. She recommends that we make at least half of our grains “whole” grains. Falk is from Manhattan, Kansas.

Bruce Johnson is the spokesperson for Minwax in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey. He’s going to show how to give picture frames “new life” by converting them into storage cases for jewelry.

Interior designer Beth Secosky is going to show how to update window treatments using a current trend – color blocking. She’ll talk about fabric selection, hanging panels and costs involved.. Her business is EASYdesigns, LLC in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

Waldorf wheat salad

1/4 cup uncooked wheat kernels

1 1/4 cups water

1 tablespoon granulated sugar

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

2 tablespoons low-fat mayonnaise

1 (6-oz) container plain or vanilla nonfat yogurt

1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup thinly sliced celery

2 medium apples, cored, chopped

1/2 cup halved red or green grapes

1/4 cup chopped English walnuts

To cook wheat kernels: place kernels and water in a slow cooker. Cover and cook on LOW overnight or until kernels are tender; drain. In serving bowl, stir together drained wheat kernels, sugar, cinnamon, mayonnaise, yogurt, vanilla, and celery. Cover; chill until ready to serve. Just before serving, stir in apples, grapes and walnuts. Makes 5 cups or 10 servings.
