Teen jailed on multiple charges in shooting

CLOVIS — Two people were shot and a 16-year-old boy was jailed on multiple charges, while a dramatic intervention by Clovis police ended the violence early Monday morning.

The teenager was in Clovis’ juvenile detention center Tuesday. A 31-year-old woman and 32-year-old man were hospitalized after suffering gunshot wounds to the shoulder and shin, respectively.

An affidavit for arrest warrant offered no motive for the shootings at the home in the 800 block of Oak Street.

The report shows the boy’s mother — who was not at the scene when the shootings began — convinced him to surrender to police.

The boy had threatened to commit suicide prior to his mother’s intervention, claiming he had “10 clips for his (ArmaLite rifle) with 40 shots in each,” according to the report.

The report shows police were called to the home about 7 a.m. Monday in reference to “8 to 9” shots fired. Police heard more shots on arrival and soon found themselves under fire, the report shows.

About 30 minutes after police arrived, they heard two more shots, “followed by a female screaming.” The woman escaped the house, but collapsed outside and was unable to move.

Seconds later, the report stated, six more shots came from the residence and a man was observed running from the residence. He’d suffered a single gunshot to his left shin, the report showed.

Police had no cover to attempt to rescue the woman and so they brought in a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle employed by a SWAT team. The armored vehicle was parked between the shooter and the woman and she was placed on a stretcher and taken to an ambulance.

The report showed the woman suffered four broken ribs and was shot through the upper left shoulder. She has since been transported to a Lubbock hospital for treatment, police said.

Conditions of the victims were not released.

At some point during the ordeal, the teenager began calling police dispatchers and demanding to speak to his mother. The boy’s mother was brought to the scene and spoke with her son by telephone.

The teen then left the residence unarmed and was taken into custody without further incident, police said.

The boy is charged with kidnapping, aggravated battery, assault with intent to commit a violent felony and aggravated assault on a peace officer.

District Attorney Andrea Reeb said she plans to pursue adult sanctions against the teen and will take the case to a grand jury in the next two to three weeks.

The affidavit for arrest warrant showed at least 20 gunshots were fired during the ordeal, which lasted about two hours after police arrived.

The report did not indicate any shots fired by police.
