NCAA cancels basketball tournaments

Lone Star Conference suspends regular season play until March 30.

INDIANAPOLIS — March Madness was no match for the coronavirus.

The NCAA announced Thursday afternoon it is canceling its basketball tournaments, along with other remaining winter and spring championships.

The decision eliminates the South Central Division II regional, which was to feature Eastern New Mexico and Texas A&M-Commerce Friday at Lubbock Christian University, and this weekend's Division II indoor track and field championships in Birmingham, Alabama.

The release: "Today, NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors canceled the Division I men’s and women’s 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships. This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities."

The Lone Star Conference, which includes ENMU, announced late Thursday afternoon it was suspending all regular season competition through March 30, effective at midnight.

The moves follow postponements by numerous professional leagues, including the National Basketball Association, National Hockey League and Major League Baseball.
