DORA — The Dora Coyotes erased a six-point halftime deficit on Wednesday and outlasted Gateway Christian 61-56 in a District 4-1A boys tournament matchup.
Brothers Alex and Joe Urioste scored 20 and 18 points, respectively, for the third-seeded Coyotes (13-12), who won their fourth in a row and beat Gateway for the second time in the past couple of weeks. Senior Wes Tipton scored 15 points, sophomore Hurley Breedyk had 12 and sophomore Luke Tipton (Wes’ brother) added 10 for the fourth-seeded Warriors (16-10).
In area girls district tourney tilts on Wednesday:
Floyd 53, Dora 38 — The visiting Lady Broncos, seeded fourth in District 4-1A, upended the third-seeded Lady Coyotes for the first time in four meetings this season after opening a 14-7 first-quarter lead.
Senior Anahi Chavez netted 15 points and freshman Catelyn Breshears 14 for Floyd (7-15). The Lady Coyotes (9-14), who were without scoring leader Randi Crandall due to an ankle sprain, were led by 14 points from senior Katelyn Kircher and 12 from eighth-grader Faith Jasso.
Melrose 44, Fort Sumner 31 — The second-seeded Lady Buffs advanced to the District 6-1A championship game at Logan on Friday, breaking away from a halftime tie by outscoring the third-seeded Vixens 26-13 in the second half.
Junior Hailey Martin scored 15 points for Melrose (22-4), which posted an 18-3 advantage at the free throw line. Sophomore Janae Dunn had 11 points for Fort Sumner (19-9).
In area boys district tourney games on Tuesday:
Farwell 39, Post 37 — The Steers advanced to the area round of the Texas Class 2A playoffs, holding off a late bid by the Antelopes in a bi-district (first-round) game played at Littlefield H.S.
Junior Jose Rodriguez scored 12 points and sophomore Grayson Waltrip added 11 for Farwell (23-10), which moved into a second-round game against Clarendon on Friday night at Canyon Randall H.S. The Steers led by 10 points in the final quarter, but were just 1-of-8 from the foul line down the stretch as the Antelopes inched ever closer.
Senior Taytem Thetford’s 14 points topped Post (14-7), which finished the season on a three-game losing streak.
Gateway Christian 57, Floyd 49 — The fifth-seeded Broncos, who recently upended Gateway Christian at home, nearly pulled it off again, leading by six points at halftime and by one entering the final quarter in the District 4-1A tournament at Roswell. But the Warriors (15-9) held them to three points in the final stanza in rallying for the win.
Seniors Joel Perry and Wes Tipton led a balanced attack for Gateway with 13 points each, while Luke Tipton scored 12 points and senior Joe Waide had 11. Meantime, Floyd (5-19) got 14 points apiece from juniors Eric Terry and Trace East.
Texico 73, Clayton 38 — The host Wolverines made short work of the Yellowjackets in District 7-2A, building a 41-12 halftime cushion.
Senior Luke Phipps and junior David Davalos paced third-seeded Texico (14-8) with 18 points each, while junior Anders Nelson chipped in 10. The top scorer for Clayton (6-18), seeded fourth, was freshman Rylan Ruf with nine points.
Logan 62, Grady 51 — At Grady, junior Garrett Bollinger scored 22 points and the fourth-seeded Longhorns took control with a 27-point third quarter in District 4-1A.
Junior Dante Sanchez chipped in 11 tallies for Logan (15-12). The third-seeded Bronchos (12-11), who were playing without leading scorer Chisum Rush (broken thumb), got 20 points from junior Isaiah Mitchell and 13 from sophomore Dustin Bryant.
In Tuesday area girls district contests:
Floyd 63, Elida 40 — The Lady Broncos went on a 16-3 run in the second quarter to take control of their home District 4-1A matchup against Elida,
Breshears led Floyd with 20 points, while Chavez and senior Adalee Alvarez added 14 and 13, respectively. For the Lady Tigers (4-23), freshman Raquel Rogers had 13 points and junior Maislyn Ferguson scored 12.
Fort Sumner 40, Clovis Christian 26 — The homestanding Vixens held CCS to four first-half points and advanced in the District 6-1A tourney.
Fort Sumner put together an extremely spread-out attack with 10 players scoring, led by junior Keeli West and sophomore Megan Oberg with six points apiece. The Lady Eagles (15-12) were paced by juniors Lola DeGroot and Makayla Robinson with 10 points apiece.
