The Melrose Buffaloes are favored for a Class 1A boys three-peat, and seven of the 10 of the selections from Curry and Roosevelt counties will open the state basketball tournament at home.

The New Mexico Activities Association announced the 10 tournament brackets Sunday, with first-round games at higher seeds and the remaining rounds in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho. All championship games will be at The Pit.

Melrose brings a 20-game winning streak into the tournament, and will host 16th seed Dora Saturday.

The Portales girls and Clovis boys also earned home games, with No. 4 Portales taking on Valley and Clovis as the eighth seed hosting La Cueva.

The Clovis girls missed the 5A field, while the Portales boys saw their chances evaporate when Lovington and Santa Teresa pulled shocking district tournament wins to nab automatic berths.

In other first-round action:

• The Melrose girls, seeded second, will host Cliff. Dora, seeded 16th, will travel to top seed Logan while Clovis Christian visits Gateway Christian in the 6-11 matchup.

• In 2A, Texico’s girls are seeded sixth and will host Clayton, while the Wolverine boys grabbed the seventh seed and will host Navajo Pine Saturday.

• Elida is the seventh seed in 1A boys and hosts Logan, while Grady hosts Quemado in the 8-9 game.
